State and Local Contacts
Among the National Trust's most frequent collaborators in protecting America's heritage are statewide and local preservation organizations and state historic preservation offices (SHPO).
A statewide is a non-profit group, normally supported by voluntary memberships, that works across its state to promote good preservation practices. A local is a similar organization, except that it focuses on a specific community or metropolitan area.
Each state must have a publicly-funded SHPO, a government agency whose responsibilities include identifying historic properties, considering National Register nominations, reviewing federal projects for their impact on historic properties, and providing assistance to federal agencies, state and local governments, and the private sector.

ALABAMA
Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation
National Trust Statewide Partner
The Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation is the voice for the future of Alabama’s historic buildings, neighborhoods and places. This is a time of tremendous growth and achievement for the Alabama Trust. With increased support and resources, we are positioned to fundamentally change the way Alabamians regard preservation. The Alabama Trust plays a vital role through on-site advocacy, a critical response and legal intervention fund, lobbying, an annual “Places in Peril” listing, newsletter, and social activities that bring Alabama preservationists together.

Arizona Main Street Program
In an effort to stimulate revitalization in the rural communities of the state, the Main Street Program was established by special legislation, in 1986. The Arizona Department of Commerce adopted the National Main Street Model to assist the rural communities in the development of a comprehensive revitalization strategy that was both incremental and long term. The Program provides direct technical assistance to certified communities, including volunteer training workshops, staff training, and activities that outline issues confronting downtown. Services provided to individual businesses and property owners include architectural design assistance for storefronts, store design and landscaping, workshops and direct consultations on market analyses, merchandising, promotions and advertising.

IDAHO
Preservation Idaho
Preservation Idaho was established in 1972 by a group of Idahoans concerned with the alarming rate at which historic sites and resources in Idaho were being lost. These individuals wanted to create an organization that could help the members of the public unite to work towards the preservation of these resources. Today, Preservation Idaho receives the support of over 250 individuals, corporations and foundations as it continues the mission of its founders and advocates heritage education and preservation issues throughout the State of Idaho.

VERMONT
Preservation Trust of Vermont
National Trust Statewide Partner
Partnerships are at the heart of how the Preservation Trust works to save and actively use our historic places. We depend on local partnerships, passion and commitment to meet our goals. Partnerships with funders like the Freeman Foundation and the Walter Cerf Fund provide significant resources to rehabilitate a wide range of historic buildings. Our partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation provides on-the-ground, face-to-face technical assistance and encouragement to local officials and community members. We work in partnership with state government and a wide variety of state-wide organizations to meet challenges like downtown revitalization, minimizing sprawl, affordable housing, and developing better building codes. These partnerships are a powerful force. They help to unleash tremendous local energy. They save historic buildings. They build local capacity. They play an important role in community revitalization. They reach every corner of our state. And in combination, they help protect the essential character of Vermont.
