Washington, DC (September 14, 2009) – National Trust for Historic Preservation president Richard Moe today spoke at the International Conference of National Trusts on the subject "Sustainable Stewardship of the Built Environment." The biennial conference, held this year in Dublin and sponsored by An Taisce, the National Trust for Ireland, and attended by more than 200 conferees, is focused on the theme: "Conservation in a Changing Climate."
It is expected that a declaration will be passed by the conference, asking world leaders to place the protection of our global heritage sites at the heart of their deliberations at the forthcoming UN Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change. The "Dublin Declaration" is also expected to contain a commitment from heritage organizations to work more effectively in promoting actions that mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Moe's plenary session address covered a core theme of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's activities: historic preservation's essential role in fighting climate change. Moe has spoken extensively throughout the Unites States about the need for national, statewide and local officials to promote the reuse, renovation, restoration and retrofitting of older and historic buildings as a way to cut carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency, promote community reinvestment and create jobs. He outlined the findings of a conference involving preservationists, architects, landscape architects, green builders and energy experts held last year at the historic Rockefeller estate at Pocantico Hills, N.Y. The Pocantico Proclamation on Sustainability and Historic Preservation – five principles to sustain the built environment and help reduce the environmental impacts associated with buildings – covers thematic guideposts Moe's organization is seeking to implement in the United States and could also by used by heritage trust organizations internationally.
On Tuesday, September 15, Executive Vice President David Brown will detail how social media – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs, and others – are being adapted by the historic preservation community to save historic sites and promote preservation. Brown will discuss how "Preservation Nation," the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Web site is utilized to mobilize support for issues and encourage advocacy, deliver news about preservation-related issues, offer technical assistance and guidance, increase engagement by the organization's membership and the general public, and broaden awareness about preservation's role in the 21st century.
The conference, taking place at Dublin Castle, runs through September 17, 2009. Additional information about the program and speakers is available at www.internationaltrusts.org.
