National Trust for Historic Preservation Announces New Grant to Aid Preservation Efforts in New York City

Robert and Elizabeth Jeffe Preservation Fund to Provide Seed Monies for Saving City’s Historic Places

New York, NY (March 9, 2010) – On March 6, the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced a new grant program targeting historic preservation in New York City. Grants from the newly created Elizabeth and Robert Jeffe Preservation Fund for New York City will provide seed monies to nonprofit organizations and government agencies for critical work in stewarding and safeguarding the rich historic places of the nation's largest city. Funding for this New York City opportunity was made possible by Elizabeth and Robert Jeffe.

"Elizabeth and Robert Jeffe's generosity will advance critical work to sustain the neighborhoods, iconic landmarks and historic landscapes that define New York City's layered and beloved sense of place," said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "The National Trust for Historic Preservation is grateful for this extraordinary gift that will benefit all who live in and visit this treasured city."

Grant awards will support activities and projects, such as:

  • Providing professional consulting services to advance planning for preservation projects or capacity-building in areas such as architecture, archaeology, engineering, preservation or land-use planning, economics, fundraising, organizational development, media relations, education and law
  • Sponsoring workshops or community forums
  • Designing, producing and marketing printed materials or other media communications to advance historic preservation
  • Surveys and inventories of historic resources

City governments, government agencies and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply and the application deadline for the inaugural grant round will be June 1, 2010. Individuals and private, for-profit businesses are not eligible to apply.

This new grant program was made possible by the Jeffes, visionary supporters of historic preservation and other charitable efforts around the world and within their New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut communities. Robert Jeffe is the chairman, Corporate Advisory Group for Deutsche Bank. Elizabeth Rohn Jeffe is a scholar of history and writing, currently teaching at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City.  Most recently, they endowed a professorship at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Mr. Jeffe's alma mater.  The Jeffes were the founding donors of the Touch Foundation, the driving force in the creation of the first western medical university in Tanzania. Mr. Jeffe served as the chairman of Touch from 2000 to 2007.  Elizabeth Jeffe is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

"The history of New York City, a place that we treasure, is unique and inspiring.  Sadly, as in many other places across the country, cherished and distinct community landmarks in the City are threatened by demolition, natural disaster and urban sprawl," said Ms. Jeffe.  "We are eager to help restore and reinvigorate the historical places of New York and we are also committed to building awareness of the City's preservations needs and initiatives."
