The Southern Field Office in Maryland
Although a relatively small state, Maryland boasts a diverse landscape, from the mountainous west to the Chesapeake Bay, as well as a rich tapestry of historic sites and communities. The Southern Field Office has two special grant programs in Maryland, and engages in advocacy to help save historic places throughout the state.
Eastern Shore
A beautiful and distinctive place both geographically and culturally, Maryland's Eastern Shore contains some of the nation's most significant colonial architecture, prehistoric archaeological sites, and pristine cultural landscapes. To learn more, please visit our Eastern Shore page.
Baltimore
Founded in 1729 at the mouth of the Patapsco River, Baltimore is a historic mid-Atlantic port city home to rowhouse neighborhoods, a revitalized waterfront, and spectacular parks and monuments. The Southern Field Office has been involved in a broad range of activities here, from fighting to save endangered buildings, to capacity-building for local organizations, to crafting long-term preservation strategies. To learn more, please visit our Baltimore page.
Annapolis
The capital of Maryland (and former temporary capital of the United States, 1783-84) Annapolis is beautifully situated on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn river. Annapolis is a city of tremendous state and national historical significance -- so much so that the entire Colonial Annapolis Historic district was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
Annapolis has a long and rich legacy of preservation, and the Southern Field Office has been involved in ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of local preservation organizations. The National Trust enjoys a strong relationship with the City, owing in part to a successful series of summits, workshops, and training sessions conducted there. Most recently, the Southern Field Office funded a National Alliance of Preservation Commissions CAMP workshop to help educate local historic preservation commissions.
In addition to technical assistance, the Southern Field Office administers a special Preservation Fund for Annapolis, which offers small matching grants for preservation activities in the city. To learn more and apply, visit http://www.preservationnation.org/resources/find-funding/grants/.
