There are 16 available AmeriCorps positions for the 2014-2015 program year. Each position requires a one-year commitment for which a one-year extension is possible after successful completion of one service year. The Preserve WV AmeriCorps program is a statewide program administered by Preservation Alliance of West Virginia (PAWV), the statewide grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation in the Mountain State. The purpose of the Preserve WV AmeriCorps program is to promote historic preservation and heritage tourism in West Virginia through historic resource re-use, improvement, and development. Members' service will focus on historic resource improvement and capacity building by utilizing heritage tourism for economic development, historic preservation for economic development and environmental stewardship, and volunteer management for community engagement. Preserve WV AmeriCorps members will be placed with an individual site throughout the state of West Virginia. Site locations include Beckley, Bruceton Mills, Charleston, Fairmont, Glen Dale, Kingwood, Morgantown, Philippi, Weston, and Wheeling.


Duties vary depending on site location, and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Historic resource improvements
  • National Register of Historic Places nomination
  • Managing, recruiting, and training volunteers
  • Museum collection management
  • Organizing workers/volunteers for site improvements
  • Developing heritage tourism events
  • Creating museum exhibits and educational programming
  • All members must complete quarterly AmeriCorps reporting and bi-weekly timesheets.


  • Demonstrable historical research abilities
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Good organization skills required to work on multiple tasks for event coordination and volunteer management purposes
  • Comfortable working with different types of people
  • Responsible and able to be self-directed and take the initiative
  • Experience with historical resources or historic preservation (or ability to prove capability to learn)
  • Familiarity with heritage tourism (or ability to prove capability to learn)
  • Some leadership experience or group/volunteer management experience (or ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills)
  • Computer experience: internet research, Microsoft Suite (including PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher), email, social media, (Graphic Design skills not necessary but appreciated)
  • Must be willing to travel statewide for some positions and training opportunities
  • College degree or significant life experience preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
