In 2009 Athens, Georgia was designated as one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations. To celebrate, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation organized a series of Heritage Walks which were promoted to local residents as well as to daytripper tourists by the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Each tour was led by a distinctive personality whose knowledge brought a unique and colorful perspective to Athens’ local history. Tours included historic neighborhoods, Athens’ downtown, cemeteries, a library, a canoe tour on the Oconee River and a farm tour.
