Despite the economic downturn, several states are making substantial investments in their state history museums.

The State Historical Society of North Dakota plans to add 97,000 square feet to their current facility, effectively doubling the size of their building.  $46 million of the $52 million price tag has been raised (with $40 million provided by the state of North Dakota).  Groundbreaking is planned for the fall of 2010, with a grand opening in 2014 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of North Dakota’s statehood.

“We’ve been fortunate in North Dakota that our booming oil industry has buffered us from the impacts of the economic downturn,” notes Claudia Berg, expansion and new initiatives coordinator for the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
