After carefully reviewing museum admission numbers, the Rhode Island School of Design decided to close their museum during the month of August in 2009 and again in August 2010 as a cost-cutting measure.

This move offered a way to respond to the need for budget cuts in response to the economic downturn, and August had consistently been the museum’s slowest month.  At the same time, recognizing that fewer arts experiences will be available in August in the Providence area, the Rhode Island Historical Society planned several “Art and the City” walking tours for August 2010. The tours included public art as well as visits to local galleries.
