Keeping Alive the Dream of a Statewide Main Street Program in Idaho
Strategy: Be Creative (More with Less), Collaborate in New Ways, Take Advantage of Tech
Type of attraction: Main Street/Community
Summary: Plans were well underway for a new statewide Main Street program in Idaho when the economy went under.
Plans were well underway for a new statewide Main Street program in Idaho when the economy went under. Recognizing that funding a new state program was not in the cards for the immediate future, preservation leaders in the state have been facilitating monthly conference calls with communities interested in the Main Street approach. “We wanted to find a way to keep up the interest in having a statewide Main Street program,” explains Nancy Richardson, president of Preservation Idaho. “That way we’ll be ready to go when we’re able to launch a full-fledged state program.”
To help promote the concept of a statewide main Street Program, Preservation Idaho’s website includes a webpage on “Main Street in Idaho” (http://www.preservationidaho.org/mainstreet) that outlines the goals and objectives for a statewide Main Street program, a downloadable white paper “An Idaho Main Street Program: Exploring the Possibilities,” and an FAQ section about what Main Street is and how a statewide program could help Idaho’s downtown revitalization efforts.
