AASHTO – American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials

ARRA – American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Arterial – A highway that provides direct service between municipalities, typically at moderately high speeds

ADT – Average Daily Traffic

Corridor – A geographic area that accommodates travel, generally in a linear pattern

CSS – Context Sensitive Solutions

Design Speed – Maximum speed at which a motor vehicle can be operated safely on that road in perfect conditions

DOT – Department of Transportation

FMIS – Fiscal Management Information System

FHWA – Federal Highway Administration

Functional Classification – Process by which streets and highways are grouped into classes, or systems, according to the character of service they are intended to provide

Grade – Rise in elevation within a given distance

Greenbook – Produced by AASHTO providing design practices in universal use as the standard for highway geometric design

HAER – Historic American Engineering Record

HCM – Highway Capacity Manual produced by TRB containing concepts, guidelines, and computational procedures for computing the capacity and quality of service of various highway facilities

Intermodal – Allows transfers between methods, or modes, of transportation

ISTEA – Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991

MPO – Metropolitan Planning Organizations

Multimodal – A system or corridor providing a range of transportation options

NBI – National Bridge Inventory

NBIS – National Bridge Inspection Standards

NTEC – National Transportation Enhancements Clearinghouse
