Bronx River Parkway

Year Listed: 1995
Location: New York
Threat: Road Construction

Significance

Last updated in 2003, designed and constructed between 1906 and 1925 during a massive environmental reclamation effort that transformed the Bronx River from a public health nuisance into a vibrant park, the Parkway offers travelers a scenic and leisurely drive from the city to the countryside. Heavy traffic has already had a negative impact on the parkway, and two proposed projects in the 1990s are likely to put more cars on the parkway at higher speeds, eventually increasing pressure to widen and straighten the roadway at the expense of adjoining parkland.
