Dear:

One of the most significant sites of our national and regional heritage is threatened by plans for construction of a coal-fired power plant immediately adjacent to the Great Falls Portage Site.

The Great Falls Portage is the site of Lewis and Clark's arduous 18-mile, 31-day portage at Great Falls, and is arguably one of the best preserved and most accessible landscapes along the Lewis and Clark Trail.  This undeveloped rural area is one of the few documented campsites along the trail.

Currently there are plans to construct a 250-megawatt coal-fired power generation station near this historic site.  This complex will include a huge 435-acre power generation building with a 400-foot smoke stack, and four 262-foot wind turbines.  This will obliterate the cultural and visual landscape that reflects Lewis & Clark's journey, resulting in the loss of integrity, and possible de-listing of this National Historic Landmark.

Protection of our cultural heritage should be a priority in this situation.  The Great Falls Portage Site should be a landscape preserved to educate future generations of the journey of Lewis and Clark, not the site of coal-fired power plant.

Sincerely,
