Our Position on Transportation
The National Trust for Historic Preservation supports Federal transportation efforts directed at protecting historic and cultural resources through Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1964 as well as more recent programs that provide funding for the preservation and protection of transportation-related historic resources and cultural sites through Enhancements Program funding under the aegis of the Department of Transportation.

4(f) can help protect some historic properties, but it is limited. My concern is that "new transit" (by that I refer to the change in transit projects in the recent past from buses moving people to rail projects and TOD's) puts a burden on historic properties and makes them vulnerable. Sure, there have been success stories with some new transit projects throughout the country, but where I live historic properties are threatened by development created by these projects and it appears not much thought is being put into it by federal agencies (counter to their federal Section 106 and Section 110 responsibilities).

Great position! Just a minor eidt. It was 1966, not "1964" as stated above...

Shouldn't it be the "Department of Transportation Act of 196[6]"?
