Dallas Hotel Unveils Renovated Penthouse

A Dallas hotel that hosted Elvis, Judy Garland, and Andy Warhol opened its top floor to the public after its most extensive renovation.
Last month the owners of the 1923 Stoneleigh Hotel gave the first public tour of its opulent 7,500-square-foot penthouse. About 200 Dallas insiders got a glimpse of the renovated 11th and 12th floors of the hotel, which reopened in March after being closed for 15 months.
The revamped hotel has a very modern look, says Judson Pankey, CEO of Dallas-based Prescott Realty Group, which owns the hotel with Apollo Real Estate Advisors. "[Our interior designers] didn't necessarily bring it back to a period piece; they injected modernity to a historic project while paying homage to the past," Pankey says.
During the $36 million project, workers uncovered arches, 1930s wallpaper chosen by designer Dorothy Draper, and a row of dormer windows in the lobby.
"Our members toured the hotel in 2006 just before it closed for renovation, so there was great anticipation to see the renovations," says Katherine Seale, executive director of Preservation Dallas.
The Stoneleigh Hotel's official opening ceremony is scheduled to take place next spring, after a courtyard is installed and its 22-story condo tower, under construction behind the hotel, is completed.
