The City of Austin, (pop. 750,000), a world-class city located in the Texas Hill Country and known for its high-tech industry, economic vitality, lakes, parks, music and the renowned University of Texas is seeking a dynamic, progressive, economic development professional to lead the Economic Growth and Redevelopment Services Office for the City of Austin.


Duties

Reporting to the City of Austin's Assistant City Manager for Development and Environmental Services, the Director is appointed by the Austin City Manager. The Director will lead a department of 44 talented professionals assigned to three primary functions: Economic Development and Redevelopment, Cultural Arts Programs, and Small Business Development. The department is engaged with the community in forming several residential and mixed-use development projects including the Mueller Redevelopment Project which will house 10,000 new residents when completed, the Second Street District, the redevelopment of a former electric power plant and water treatment plant located in Downtown, two Downtown PID's, and two Downtown TIF's. The department has an extensive and well-regarded small business development program. A growing community, Austin was one of the first cities to recognize and embrace the creative industries as a key component to economic development. The department leads a variety of programs to support the cultural arts (CreateAustin) and music creative industries. The Director will work very closely with the economic development community including the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce in attracting business to Austin.

Qualifications

The Director must possess strong communication and consensus building skills inside and outside of City Hall and a participatory management philosophy with a record of success in leading as well as collaborating on economic development efforts. A bachelor's degree in planning, business, economic development or related field is required; a master's degree in business, public administration or related field is strongly desired along with 7 years of increasingly responsible economic development leadership experience.
