Former Conference Band Wins Grammy
Congratulations to Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience for winning the first-ever Grammy for Zydeco or Cajun Music at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, February 10, 2008, for their album Live World Wide.
Simien and his wife, Cynthia, began lobbying the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2001 to create a separate category for Cajun and Zydeco music, which was formerly lumped together with all folk music. If Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience sounds familiar, that's probably because they played at the Opening Reception of the 2006 National Main Streets Conference in New Orleans.
Historic Saratoga Springs Enters the Mobile Marketing Age
The Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association and its marketing partner, Informz, launched a program last summer that enables visitors to send text messages from their mobile phones to receive coupons and special event information from downtown businesses.
This program, which ran through the end of October, is timed to take advantage of the large crowds that Saratoga Springs receives each August from horse racing and tourism. Informz, an eMarketing company that is headquartered in Saratoga Springs, is providing the technology for the program as a trial of its new mobile marketing platform. Sixteen Saratoga restaurants, nightclubs, and other businesses are participating in this program. Examples of text messages include: restaurants and retailers offering a 10 percent discount and nightclubs promoting their live music schedules.
"This program enables visitors to find the best of downtown, promotes our fellow businesses and provides exposure for our new technology," says Joe Tyler, Informz CEO. "Mobile marketing is a different medium from the Internet and requires solutions that embrace its personal and in-the-moment nature. This solution, is in essence, a very localized search service for downtown visitors."
