HUD HOPE VI Main Street Grant Funds
About the Program
HUD's HOPE VI Main Street program makes grants to support the development of affordable housing projects in areas that are engaged in a broader Main Street revitalization effort. Between 2005 and 2010, awards totaling nearly $14.5 million were made to 18 municipalities. Approximately 1 grant in the amount of $500,000 will be awarded through the NOFA in the FY 11 round. (There is a possibility that FY 11 applicants that are unsuccessful in FY 011 would automatically be considered by FY 12 funding, if FY 12 funds are made available by Congress.)
Applicants must be an official unit of government and must:
- Have a population of 50,000 or less;
- and Not be served by a local government, county/parish, regional, or state public housing agency (PHA) that administers more than 100 physical public housing units within the local government’s jurisdiction. (Such units exclude Section 8 Housing Voucher subsidized units and public housing units in Mixed-Finance developments where the PHA is not the General Partner in the for-profit ownership entity.)
How to Apply
The FY 11 Notice of Funding Availability for the HOPE VI Main Street program is now available for download. Applications are due August 22, 2011. Even if you're unclear on whether your community should prepare an application, visit www.grants.gov. The HOPE VI Main Street application must be filed electronically and all applicants must first register with grants.gov in order to submit an application online (The registration process itself can take up to two to four weeks).

Case study summaries of past recipients compiled by the Main Street Center shed light on the size and scope of successfully funded projects in recent years.
