San Luis Obispo Urban Tree Inventory - The Public Works Department of the City of San Luis Obispo, was alarmed by the failure of a large Ficus nitida in their downtown core area. This large tree split and crushed a car, but without injury to people. Concerns arose about other risks and the level of care necessary to maintain their large inventory of street trees. Ron Combs, Urban Forester, in conjunction with City Administrators, decided to obtain an objective evaluation of selected tree trees from a qualified arborist. Due to the large quantity of trees and the allocated budget, it was decided to limit the assessment to Ficus and Carrotwood trees in key areas. A project map and list of street addresses was created that designated trees to be inspected.
