Creating an Urban Green Trail
The Kingston (N.Y.) Green Trail is a community development alliance formed to turn institutions and businesses along the community's Broadway Corridor into leaders of green redevelopment. Following the route of the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, the green line painted from Uptown to the waterfront along Broadway has been repurposed as a trail. This Green Trail is a platform for collaboration to transform the center of this small city into a low-carbon, self-reliant, mixed-use community with high energy-efficiency and renewable energy systems, green roofs and expanded gardens, bicycle infrastructure, and a revitalized streetscape – designed and built as much as possible by local businesses. Through individual case studies of projects along the green trail, a replicable model will emerge to guide green Main Street revitalization for other communities.
