Don't Drive Away Your Auto Heritage!
Communities that grew with the auto-tourists of 1910-1940 share unique traits and trends. Are you located in an early- to mid-20th century historic district along one of America's first "hard top" systems? See how existing features of traditional auto-corridors can become community gateways. This session will discuss significant character components and economic strategies for structures (functional and even whimsical) that might just be the most endangered features of your Main Street districts today.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify a hierarchy of auto related architectural forms in creating auto corridor gateways to Main Street
- Physical characteristics of the actual road and infrastructure of the historic corridor streetscape
- Undiscovered transit links or connections which could open more levels of significance for new historic districts or heritage tourism connections
