Let's Paint the Town!

A small western Kentucky community with a population of 6,300 has given itself and communities across the nation a present  downtowns with a fresh new look and a renewed spirit of volunteerism and teamwork. Princeton's award-winning "Let's Paint the Town!" project, a historic preservation/downtown revitalization effort, has had community members rolling up their sleeves and volunteering in ways that would challenge any town in America. The success of the project truly exemplifies the slogan, "Preservation equals Economic Development." Gone are the boarded-up vacant buildings from our downtowns' Main Street horizon! With community participation, donated funds, and volunteer labor, downtowns in America are being transformed. Come share our experiences, catch the spirit, and learn the trade secrets of "Let's Paint the Town!"

Learning Objectives:

  • To identify partners at the local, regional, and state level and develop a community base of resources for initiating change.
  • To consider potential buildings for revitalization and develop a plan of action for volunteers and donors to come on board with the project.
  • To manage the project, maintain the momentum and spirit of the campaign, and market your results which will create a lower rate of vacancy in your downtown historic district.
