Keeping Historic Main Street RIPE

Historic architecture sets the stage for Main Streets−the physicality associated with a sense of place. Learn about evaluation and protection of historic resources as community assets, designation, design review, façade improvement grants, and building rehabilitations. Presenters will show how infill construction, major rehabilitations, and landscape and streetscape improvements in historic commercial districts enrich community vitality and quality of life.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain a better understanding and appreciation for historic resources in your Main Street community, and how they contribute to downtown vitality.
  2. Use a "fresh eye" to identify distinct architectural and character-defining details within downtown settings
  3. Understand preservation strategies to help maintain historic character in downtown settings
  4. Discover how compatible infill and streetscape improvements for Main Street areas can enhance and complement existing historic resources

Paul Trudeau, National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC)
Paul Trudeau is the Program Director for the NAPC, a membership-based nonprofit serving local historic preservation commissions through training, education, and advocacy. His responsibilities include program development, technical assistance, coordination of training events, and production of educational publications for NAPC members.

Jim Gabbert, National Register of Historic Places
Jim Gabbert has been a historian with the National Register of Historic Places program at the National Park Service since 2007. Following a three year stint at the non-profit Indiana Landmarks, he served as the National Register coordinator and structures reviewer for the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office from 1999 2007. He holds an MS in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University and a BA in History and Geography from Indiana University.

Roxanne Eflin, Maine Downtown Center
Roxanne is Senior Program Director for the Maine Downtown Center. She served as Executive Director of Maine Preservation and has worked extensively in downtown revitalization and historic preservation. Roxanne's has a Master's Degree in Urban Planning and Historic Preservation and is a Certified International Tour Manager.

Jenny Parker, LEED AP, National Park Service
Jenny Parker, LEED AP, joined the National Park Service in 2006. Since then she has been studying the impacts of the green movement on historic buildings and has presented her findings at several national conferences and workshops. Ms. Parker is also responsible for the review of federal historic tax credit projects for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and has published two versions of an "Introduction to Federal Tax Credits for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings" focusing on Rowhouses and Wood Frame Houses. She has a MFA in Historic Preservation from Savannah College of Art and Design and a BS in Building Science from Auburn University.

Megan Brown, National Park Service
Megan works as the Certified Local Government National Coordinator within the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division of the National Park Service. She works with over 1830 communities certified as having a commitment to preservation in partnership with the State Historic Preservation Offices in all 50 states. Through partnerships and the allocation of Historic Preservation Fund grants to local communities, Megan helps local preservationists take on projects to engage and save their communities. In addition she manages grants from the Historic Preservation Fund, including: Save Americas Treasures, Preserve America and annual funding to fifteen State Historic Preservation Offices.

Cary Tyson, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program

Cary Tyson is the Deputy Director of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. Prior to that, he served as Director of Main Street Arkansas from February 2007 to November 2012. He served as Assistant Director from October 2001 to February 2007. He was a 2011-12 Trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation by nature of serving as the National Main Street Coordinators’ Executive Committee Chairman for 2011-2012. He was appointed by Governor Mike Beebe to the Arkansas Volunteerism Advisory Council in March 2009 and served as its 2011 Chair. In March 2013 Cary was appointed to the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank’s Community Development Advisory Board. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in English.
