Discover how one small rural community turned its downtown into a site for worksite wellness, local food sourcing, and small business support to create a healthier place for workers. In light of recent nationwide health care reform, this community sought to implement a wellness program for small entrepreneurs that would offer health assessments, environmental scans, low or no-cost health interventions, and nutrition incentives to get people eating better and eating local, exercising at work, and getting healthier. Unique partnerships with a public health agency helped create best practices that assure quality and privacy for participants.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how to identify likely partners to address public health concerns.
  2. Get ideas for increasing physical activity in the downtown.
  3. Discover low-cost promotions that yield long-term health improvements.
  4. Be able to help to small businesses prevent absenteeism, improve morale, and redefine the conversation around "benefits" and "health care," perks that entrepreneurs may not be able to afford at start-up (or ever).
