The Southwest Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking a qualified individual to carry out the regional office work plan and address preservation priorities in a four-state area including Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The Program Officer (PO) provides direct assistance to constituents via phone, e-mail and written correspondence, public presentations, workshops and in-the-field services to save historic places and revitalize communities. This includes technical assistance, advocacy support and organizational development assistance. The PO manages grants and is heavily involved in several other programs, including: National Preservation Honor Awards, Diversity Scholarships, 11 Most Endangered listings, State and Local Partners and other regional and national initiatives such as Teardowns, Historic Schools, Recent Past, etc.
Duties
- Perform all duties as directed with the aim of helping achieve Next Trust strategic goals, including: engaging the public, reaching more diverse communities and constituents, building partnerships in the non-profit and governmental arenas, and increasing the regional office's financial independence. More specifically:
- Serve as principal liaison for National Trust preservation programs, grants and loan programs, special national programs and demonstration projects in assigned states, coordinating closely with the Director and key partners in his or her assigned states.
- In association with the Director, represent the National Trust and serve as liaison with government agencies, state historic preservation offices, statewide and local organizations, National Trust Advisors, and other constituents.
- In association with the Director and the Program Administrator, produce a quarterly e-letter
- In coordination with the Director, identify new opportunities for regional fundraising and assist in fund raising activities for the core budget and Preservation Funds.
- Recommend annual work program and budget for field services and special projects.
- Manage additional projects, as periodically assigned by the Director.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in historic preservation (or related field) and five years experience in historic preservation, community planning, or related field.
- Knowledge of non-profit development and/or management, fundraising, public policy advocacy and/or community revitalization desirable.
- Strong written and oral communications skills and experience in public speaking required.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft programs; demonstrated experience creating effective and engaging presentations and outreach materials using Power Point, web tools and graphics software a plus.
- Successful candidate is well-organized, can prioritize and juggle many tasks, is a self-starter who is highly motivated and energetic, and can work both independently and in close coordination with others.
- Experience engaging culturally diverse audiences a plus; ability to speak and understand Spanish desirable.
- Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as required is essential.
