The National Trust Community Investment Corporation (NTCIC), a for profit subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, seeks a CONTROLLER to be responsible for the accounting and reporting of the company.  NTCIC is a national syndicator of Historic and/or New Markets Tax Credit real estate investments and provides asset management for approximately 50 rehabilitation projects.  The Controller will supervise the accounting staff and work directly with the asset management and acquisitions departments to provide monthly financial reports, operating and fund budgets, and to coordinate the annual audit and tax return preparation.  


Duties

General Accounting

  • Maintain the general ledgers using Lawson Business Systems and QuickBooks.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for use by Executive management, as well as the Audit Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Maintain cash management system to effectively monitor banking activities and ensure adequate cash flow to meet the company's requirements.
  • Interface with National Trust Accounting Department for parent company consolidation.
  • Coordinate the GAAP audit with the independent auditors and with the parent company.
  • Ensure tax reports are timely filed or extended via coordination with auditors.
  • Review current and proposed revenue recognition pronouncements to monitor compliance for GAAP reporting.
  • Monitor the impact of FIN 46 for purposes of the audit.
  • Ensure compliance with the established Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual to safeguard company assets.
  • Responsibility includes all related A/P, A/R, journal entries, payroll and reconciliations.

Equity Accounting

  • Manage the equity related financial accounting and tax preparation of all investment funds.
  • Responsible for the reporting of all equity investment and related cash activity for all funds.
  • Manage the equity consolidation of the lower tier audited financial statements.

Administration /Other

  • Oversee the HR procedures to ensure proper controls and compliance with payroll related reporting.
  • Provide guidance to the accounting staff to improve and standardize knowledge of financial management matters.
  • Perform such other and further tasks as requested by the COO. 

Qualifications

Due to the scope of the position, the interaction with various departments, and the need for certain technical experience, the background of the ideal candidate is significant.  The successful candidate will report to the Chief Operations Officer.  Specifically, the following represents minimum qualifications:

Knowledge

  • Accounting and financial control from systems to analysis.
  • Structure of a typical commercial real estate transaction.
  • Real estate asset management & project accounting.
  • Partnership & Equity accounting and taxation for real estate entities.
  • Consolidation for equity partnership reporting.

Education

  • B.S. in Accounting or related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required

Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years experience with a public accounting firm.
  • Minimum five (5) years accounting & taxation experience, and hands-on management experience with financial operations for an organization.
  • Proven organizational and management skills.
  • Experience with tax credit equity highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient with accounting software programs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software, including word, excel and outlook.

  • Capable of operating with minimum supervision and direction in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and able to provide feedback on the ideas of other team members.
