Reporting to the executive director, the director of preservation is responsible for management of the Preservation Department and of historic buildings, landscapes, and collections at Drayton Hall, a National Trust for Historic Preservation Historic Site. One of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in America, Drayton Hall (c. 1738) is the oldest preserved plantation house that is open to the public. Following seven generations of Drayton family ownership, the house remains in nearly original condition and has never been modernized, providing an unmatched look at colonial living and its builders' creative craftsmanship.
Duties
- Strategically build the Preservation Department in keeping with the strategic plan.
- Implement and manage preservation programs for historical buildings
- Refine and implement collections management plan.
- Play a key role in the design, development, and construction of a multi-purpose facility (or facilities) for collections storage, interpretation, educational spaces, and offices.
- Oversee implementation of master landscape plan and the proper stewardship and interpretation of archaeological resources
- Ensure maintenance staff provides professional stewardship for all buildings and grounds and that the site's historical resources are preserved in the face of daily public visitation and site use.
- Produce publications and presentations for public and professional audiences.
- Assist executive director and director of development in fund-raising efforts.
- Coordinate inter-departmental special projects as required.
- Contribute to the overall success of Drayton Hall in achieving its mission.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in historic preservation, museum studies, history, archaeology, architecture, liberal arts, or related field required, PhD a plus.
- Minimum 10 years experience in professional capacity working with museums, historic sites, preservation organization, or related setting.
- Proven oral, written, administrative, and organizational skills, along with fundraising experience.
