The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the nation's leading advocacy organization dedicated to saving historic places to support sustainable and revitalized communities, has a summer internship opportunity for a business school student with strong business assessment and strategic planning skills to work with a high-level staff and trustee task force on the expansion of business opportunities at our historic sites. The National Trust owns or operates 29 sites across the country — including a number of National Historic Landmarks with impressive architecture in stunning settings. The Trust is leading a national examination of the financial sustainability of these sites as the use moves from museums to centers for community engagement.
Duties
Several of our sites have modest businesses associated with their mission-related work (e.g., museum shops, hospitality businesses, e-commerce), but with one or two exceptions these businesses are not at a scale or sophistication to have significant impact on the bottom line. The National Trust is eager to examine in depth the business opportunities presented by our historic sites and develop plans to assist them in assessing and implementing the most appropriate ones. Because of our role as the leader of America's preservation movement, the information from this project will also be used to inform the future of America's 10,000+ historic sites.
The intern will be asked to examine current business practices at our sites and work with a high-level staff and trustee Business Advisory Group to assess real opportunities for growth in this arena. A report of the opportunities, along with suggested steps for vetting and implementation, will be prepared. The intern will report to the Director of Special Initiatives at the National Trust and will work closely with the Vice President of Business & Finance. Trustees from some of the country's top business schools will also work as part of the Business Advisory Group and will interact on a regular basis with the intern.
Qualifications
Candidate must be an MBA student, and should be a self-starting, social entrepreneur with a detailed knowledge of business practices. Ideal candidates will be those with a track record of utilizing their creativity and business acumen in support of mission-driven efforts or institutions.
