The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the nation's leading advocacy organization dedicated to saving historic places to support sustainable and revitalized communities, has a summer internship opportunity for a business school student with an interest in entrepreneurship and strategic planning to assess and plan for an expansion of the hospitality business at our historic sites.

Duties

The National Trust owns or operates 29 sites across the country — including a number of National Historic Landmarks with impressive architecture in stunning settings.  The Trust is leading a national examination of the financial sustainability of these sites as the use moves from museums to centers for community engagement.

Several of our sites have modest hospitality-related businesses, but not at a scale or sophistication to have significant impact on the bottom line. The National Trust is eager to examine best practices in hospitality entrepreneurship and marketing, developing a plan from that information for an aggressive expansion of hospitality business at our historic sites. We are primarily focused on the use of the site for the event, catering and meeting markets.  Because of our role as the leader of America's preservation movement, the information from this project will also be used to inform the future of America's 10,000+ historic sites.

The intern will be asked to examine industry standards and best practices for hospitality at high-end historic locations.  Work will focus on the National Trust Historic Site Woodlawn, in Mount Vernon, VA, which is undergoing a transformation of both its museum and hospitality functions under the guidance of a high-level trustee task force.  A strategic business development plan for a coordinated and high-level hospitality business at Woodlawn will be prepared by the intern, complete with a review of the event market in the region and recommendations for marketing and implementation.  In addition, conclusions for other hospitality-related work at the National Trust and its other historic sites will be developed.  The intern will report to the Vice President of Business & Finance, and will work closely with the Director of Special Initiatives at the National Trust and the Director of Woodlawn.  Members of the Trustee Task Force will also be available to assist the intern.

Qualifications

Candidate must be an MBA student, and should be a self-starting, social entrepreneur with a detailed knowledge of business practices.  Strategic planning and/or product management experience in the hospitality industry is preferred.   Ideal candidates will be those with a track record of utilizing their creativity and business acumen in support of mission-driven efforts or institutions.
