Sweet Auburn Historic Neighborhood Revitalization Partnership Project
GeorgiaThe historically significant African American inner-city neighborhood known as Sweet Auburn once served as home to some of Atlanta's prominent African American businesses and residents. Like many urban areas adversely impacted by poverty and suburban sprawl, the neighborhood suffered severely from urban decay by the early 1990s. Recognizing both its historical and cultural significance, concerned citizens banned together and formed community partnerships to develop a strategy to revitalize the neighborhood. This case study demonstrates how community partners utilized new approaches to address age-old preservation challenges.
