Thirty-One New Field Representatives Hired

specialists providing on-the-ground technical assistance to local preservation groups and projects. Several larger preservation organizations, such as Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, had regional field offices that offered assistance, but in many areas of the country it was tough to get preservation specialists to visit local communities and give on-site help. By 2008, there were six preservation field representatives, working in collaborations between the National Trust Regional Offices and statewide organizations, in Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Michigan.

Now the approach has taken an unprecedented leap forward, thanks to the National Trust’s new Partners in the Field Grant program. In the first round of funding, announced in February 2008, Partners in the Field grants went to the following 24 organizations, which have hired these new field representatives:

These versatile professionals will provide direct assistance to communities, nonprofit organizations, and owners of historic properties through correspondence, site visits, public presentations, testimony, workshops, conferences and seminars, and special projects.

A second round of grant recipients will be announced in February 2009, with more new hires to follow.
