Anita Canovas, associate general counsel for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, provides a variety of legal services for the organization, both with respect to corporate law matters and on substantive preservation law issues as a member of the Legal Defense Fund.

In her capacity as corporate counsel, Canovas has assisted with a number of real property acquisitions and dispositions of historic properties on behalf of the National Trust. She also provides assistance to the National Trust's fundraising department. 

In the area of legal advocacy, Canovas has worked extensively on issues relating to the application of federal and state preservation laws, with a particular focus on cultural resource, tribal and archaeological preservation, land use, and related environmental issues. She is the principal National Trust liaison with a number of Native American tribes, and has been an active participant in the Sacred Places Coalition. She has provided extensive assistance to state and local preservationists on historic preservation law matters.

Prior to joining the National Trust in 2000, Canovas served as in-house counsel to a major landholding company in Vermont, handling corporate transactions and a variety of land use issues. She has also served as counsel to an energy company in El Paso, Texas, where her practice focused on natural and cultural resource issues.

She graduated from the George Washington University in 1991, and received her law degree from Vermont Law School in 1994.
