THIS PLACE MATTERS CAMPAIGN

This Month's Resource Highlight:
Learn the proper treatment for flooded older and historic buildings.

This Month's Partner Resource:
Learn about NTCIC's investment in the rehab of Baltimore's American Brewery Brewhouse.

This May we used Preservation Month to launch our This Place Matters campaign. So far people in 45 states and territories have submitted more than 200 photos and videos. The great state of Texas leads the pack with 35 submissions. Ohio preservationists come in second with 17 submissions, including many that use the campaign to help save endangered buildings like the Gallion High School and the McCormick Middle School in Wellington. And Oklahoma, which will play host to our National Preservation Conference this fall rounds out the top three with 14 submissions including the story of the Rock Café , where owner Dawn Welsh is determined to restore the Route 66 landmark after a May 18th fire.

Join our campaign and submit a picture -- or a video -- of your own!  It's easy and can do wonders to raise awareness for a place you care about.  Who knows, maybe you’ll be as successful as the Citizens for the Preservation of St. Augustine, whose video on that city's Ivanhoe House has been viewed more than 9,000 times on our YouTube Channel.

A CIVIL WAR JOURNEY WITH ED BEARSS

Renowned lecturer Ed Bearss is your guide for National Trust Tours' A Civil War Journey. You’ll begin your tour with a reception at beautiful National Trust Headquarters - a Beaux Arts Mansion in Washington’s Dupont Circle.  Over the next 5 days, you’ll visit the newly opened Lincoln Cottage, where the Lincoln family spent summers during his presidency; tour Harpers Ferry; meet with a Civil War reenactor; trace the monumental battles of Antietam and Gettysburg and join Gettysburg National Park staff for a discussion of the challenges of battlefield preservation.  Ed Bearss, Chief Historian Emeritus of the National Park Service, is a speaker, author, commentator, and recipient of numerous awards for his contributions to Civil War history.

WHAT IS A 21st CENTURY HOUSE MUSEUM?

In the 1850's, Ann Pamela Cunningham founded the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association to purchase the then threatened home of George Washington and turn it into -- you guessed it -- a house museum.  With that act, a movement was born.

Today, historic sites face a range of challenges never envisioned by Ms. Cunningham and the Ladies -- from competition from the World Wide Web to $4.00 a gallon gas.  In response, we convened a symposium of experts to discuss what's in store for house museums in the 21st century.  Their findings are detailed in the spring 2008 issue of Forum Journal, the National Trust for Historic Preservation's quarterly publication for professional preservationists -- and volunteers like today's Ann Pamela Cunningham.
