NATIONAL PRESERVATION AWARDS INSPIRE!

Each year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation honors individuals, nonprofit organizations, corporations and public agencies that stand out for their preservation efforts. This year's event, held in conjunction with our National Preservation Conference, was no exception. The awards ceremony, held at the spectacular Art Deco Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, OK, honored organizations and projects in states from Arizona to Illnois to Tennessee and included projects as diverse as an Army Guard in Topeka, Kansas, and the Crown Canyon Archaeological Center in Cortez, Colorado.

Discover amazing stories and videos of all of our National Preservation Award recipients.  Their stories will inspire you.  Read and be inpsired to make an effort in your community!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN NEW ORLEANS

Reach out and make a difference by spending a week in New Orleans, volunteering to help bring more families home again as recovery efforts there continue.  The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) and the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans, are sponsoring work weeks from January through June 2009 (see dates on our volunteer page).  You can join a group of soon-to-be best friends equally committed to using preservation to bring New Orleans back.  Why not bring a friend and introduce them to the role preservation is playing in the city's recovery?

Volunteers pay their own travel expenses to reach New Orleans and a $250 participation fee that covers housing, food, a t-shirt, a reusable water bottle and daily transportation to and from the work site for the week.  Housing is dormitory-style and the typical work day is 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  During the week, National Trust for Historic Preservation field staff will also offer a special opportunity to explore the unique preservation story that is New Orleans, as well as discuss some of the ongoing work of the New Orleans field office.

THE VOTES ARE IN FROM PRESERVATION NATION!

This month, America voted for change.  As part of our outreach to the incoming Congress and Adminstration, we asked YOU to help rank our policy recommendations on how historic preservation can make a difference in the lives of all Americans.  The votes are in, and overwhelmingly you voted for the Administration to focus on how preservation can help the nation achieve real change to help our economy and help Americans live more sustainably.  Read more, vote for your own priorities and see all the survey results here.

In addition to voting for change on the federal level, Americans grappled with hundreds of state and local ballot initiatives dealing with rehab tax credits, planning measures and individual community preservation projects.  View our brand new map of local ballot initiatives and help us add results from your local elections.
