WE NEED YOU!

To help give $1 million away!  The National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express are giving away $1 million in preservation grants to historic places.  Following our successful programs in San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans, Greater Boston is the chosen locale for 2009, with 25 historic places reflecting the region’s rich and diverse cultural heritage competing for grants.  Online voting opens today, with the top vote recipients receiving a guarantee to have their project funded.  Vote early and often (well, once a day anyway) through May 17.  Stay loyal to one site or share your support by voting for a different site each day.

>> See the 25 historic places competing this year.
>> Join fellow preservationists in the Greater Boston area at the Big Apple Circus Partners (a sponsor of this year’s program) on Preservation day – April 26th – with special ticket discounts.

ONE STEP FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK?

Two weeks ago, Blair Mountain in West Virginia –a 2006 11 Most Endangered site – was named to the National Register of Historic Places, an important step forward for the preservation of this site of the landmark 1921 coalfield labor battle.  But within 7 days, West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin’s administration requested that the site be de-listed.  The National Trust for Historic Preservation and our local partners remain committed to preserving Blair Mountain Battlefield.  Join us in telling Governor Manchin that the site of the miners’ stand should be preserved. Sign our online petition today!

And stay tuned for the 2009 11 Most Endangered Historic Places announcement, to take place on April 28.

IT IS EASY BEING GREEN

On March 25th, the National Trust for Historic Preservation opened its Preservation Green Lab in Seattle, Washington.  The Preservation Green Lab is our first stand-alone field office, and it is dedicated to advancing the relationship between preservation and sustainability.  It was founded to respond to requests from municipalities and states on how they could integrate historic preservation and their existing buildings and neighborhoods into their sustainability plans and policies.  The Preservation Green Lab will also serve as a national clearinghouse for best practices for green rehabilitation.  Seattle, San Francisco and Dubuque have agreed to be the Preservation Green Lab's first pilot cities, and additional cities are being considered for future projects and partnerships.  Learn more about the Green Lab’s genesis and initial work.
