Kresge Foundation Support Launches Sustainability Program

A respected philanthropic leader, the Kresge Foundation believes that climate change is among the paramount issues of our time, presenting formidable challenges and risks as well as opportunities for innovation. The Foundation's in-depth commitment to addressing climate change ranges from its innovative Green Building Initiative, which awards grants to advance environmental sustainability through green design and construction, to its state-of-the-art headquarters, which integrates a 19th-century farmhouse with a contemporary glass-and-steel structure to create a model of sustainable design.

Now, with a $1 million grant awarded in 2008, Kresge has become the lead partner in the National Trust's newly launched Sustainability Program. The Foundation's funds were especially instrumental in enabling the recent launch of our Preservation Green Lab in Seattle, Wash., which will undertake important research on sustainability and work in partnership with selected local governments to develop and implement policies that encourage development that is both economically viable and environmentally responsible.

Combined with the support of other donors, the generosity and vision of The Kresge Foundation are substantially advancing our comprehensive effort to spotlight preservation's role in combating climate change and fostering sustainability.
