Marcia V. Mayo

Supporting Historic Places in Oklahoma and Nationwide

In recent years, Oklahoma native Marcia V. Mayo has given the National Trust many reasons to be grateful for her boundless energy, dedication and leadership.  This dynamic member of our Board of Trustees chaired the HGTV/NTHP Restore America gala for two years, creating memorable events that introduced many new friends to preservation. As a co-chair of the 2008 National Preservation Conference in Tulsa, she helped make her home state a vibrant host for the preservation movement's premier annual gathering.

A $2,500 grant from the Mayo Fund supported an architectural master plan for the historic McAlester Scottish Rite Masonic Center (c. 1930, NR). The plan provided guidance for the overall project by setting priorities, describing deficiencies, suggesting methods of repair along with materials which kept the restoration within historic preservation guidelines.

Marcia's commitment to Oklahoma's historic places is exemplified by two generous acts: First, to provide a source of funding for projects across the Sooner State, Marcia and her sister established the Ruth and Allen Mayo Fund for Historic Preservation in memory of their parents.

Later, to strengthen the outreach capacity of the National Trust's Southwest Office, she made a major matching gift to the Daniel K. Thorne Challenge for Regional Office Endowment as part of the People Saving Places campaign.

Through a creative mix of direct support and a deferred estate gift, Marcia has laid a strong foundation for preserving and celebrating the heritage that means so much to her and her fellow Oklahomans.
