Legacy Circle LogoThe acanthus leaf is the decorative element of the Corinthian column. Its significance rises from the story of a young Corinthian woman's gravesite and the work of a marble carver. The woman's nurse had placed a basket of the woman's favorite goblets upon her grave and covered it with a heavy tile for protection from the weather. With spring, however, the shoots of a tenacious acanthus plant grew up around the basket, creating a sight that caught the artistic eye of the passing marble carver. Recognizing the beauty of the natural formation, he created a new column that he called Corinthian in memory of the woman from Corinth. From the regeneration of the acanthus plant, a great and lasting component of our architectural heritage was born.
