The Robert W. Wilson Legacy Challenge

The Robert W. Wilson Charitable Trust has issued a planned giving challenge in conjunction with People Saving Places, the Campaign for America's Heritage.  The challenge is designed to encourage members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation to make planned gifts to the organization.  Demographics of the National Trust for Historic Preservation membership make this a unique opportunity.

The $600,000 challenge ($200,000 for 3 years) is issued to gifts to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, its Regional Offices, and Historic Sites.

For each planned gift committed between October 1, 2007 and September 31, 2010, the Wilson Charitable Trust will provide a 10% match.  To qualify, gifts are required to be at least $10,000 in value, and they will be matched up to $100,000; as the maximum 10% match is $10,000.  The total pool of funds available for the match over the three year period is $600,000.

Examples:

  1. An individual informs the National Trust for Historic Preservation that the organization is to be a beneficiary of their trust, which is managed by their bank.  The value of the assets designated for the National Trust is $165,000.  After the donor completes the appropriate documentation required for the Wilson PG Challenge, a match of $10,000 will be designated for the Trust.

  2. A staff member at Chesterwood, a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation , identifies a supporter interested in a charitable gift annuity.  Working with the Planned Giving Office at HQ, the donor establishes a $35,000 charitable gift annuity with the National Trust to benefit Chesterwood.  A match of $3,500 will be designated for the Trust.

  3. An individual makes a gift of their 1897 Queen Anne style house (a Gift of Heritage) to the National Trust for Historic Preservation through their will.  The property is valued at $385,000.  A match of $10,000 will be designated to the Historic Sites Fund.  (Unless otherwise directed by the donor, Gifts of Heritage benefit the Historic Sites.
