Support Historic Preservation Funding in Nevada
Background Information
Governor Jim Gibbons’ proposed budget would drastically cut spending on Nevada’s heritage and cultural programs. Funding for the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office would be cut in half, and the Nevada Historical Society’s ten-person staff would be reduced to five.
The Governor's draconian budget cuts would eliminate historic preservation grants that support community projects, including the publication of walking tours, historic surveys of places as diverse as Sparks and Henderson, and "bricks and mortar" work on historic buildings. Among recently-funded projects are the creation of disabled access to programming at the Fleischman Planetarium and the relocation of a threatened Las Vegas railroad cottage to the Clark County Heritage Museum.
Additionally, significant heritage sites – such as the just-renovated East Ely Railroad Depot Museum and the Comstock History Center in Virginia City – would be closed. Also, surviving museums would only be open four days per week.
Take Action
The Nevada State Legislature is currently in session and holding hearings that will determine the fate of funding for historic preservation. Use our online e-mail form to inform your representatives of the consequences of eliminating funding to historical societies, museums and preservation grant programs.

Please preserve Historic Preservation , It is the best gift to our children that a society can create and maintain. Why educate and not preserve? History is where we have been, a foundation for where we can go.

Nevada has a rich history and to cut the already meager budget for historic preservation is criminal. What will we leave for our children to be proud of.
