Rehabilitation of Historic Schools Act of 2010

Title

Rehabilitation of Historic Schools Act of 2010 (H.R. 4133/S. 2970)

Sponsors

      • H.R .4133: Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA)
      • S. 2970: Senator Jim Webb (D-VA)

Status

H.R. 4133 was introduced on November 19, 2009, and was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. S. 2970 was introduced on January 29, 2010, and was referred to the Senate Committee on Finance.

Our Position

The National Trust for Historic Preservation supports the goals of the Representative Cantor's (H.R. 4133) and Senator Webb's (S. 2790) bills to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exempt public school rehabilitation from the tax-exempt use exception to the rehabilitation credit. The National Trust advocates for the continued use of older and historic neighborhood schools as an anchor for healthy communities. We seek not only to reaffirm the contribution made by historic neighborhood schools to their communities, but also to provide policy direction for state policy makers and for community preservation advocates who help shape state policies.

We are tracking these bills as part of our ongoing focus on historic neighborhood schools.

Historic schools are being lost at an extremely alarming rate. Since the year 2000, over 100 rural and community centered schools in Ohio have been demolished, while others are abandoned. Passing the Rehabilitation of Historic Schools Act of 2010 will: - provide tax credits to local school districts allowing educational facility rehabilitation projects a more competitive advantage when compared with new construction projects - create more jobs, since rehabilitation is more labor intensive - show the students and community that the greenest building is one already built Please visit: http://renovateohioschools.wordpress.com
