National Trust Headquarters Photo Mosaic
Help build this photo of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Headquarters in Washington, DC!
Built in 1915, this place originally mattered because it was home to many movers and shakers in early 20th-century Washington, DC, including industrialist Andrew Mellon, diplomats Sumner Welles and Robert Woods Bliss, and Washington hostess Perle Mesta.
In 1940, the luxury apartment building was converted to office use and served as the headquarters of the British Air Commission during World War II. In 1977, the National Trust for Historic Preservation purchased and rehabbed the building as a then state-of-the-art illustration of how historic buildings could be adapted for office use. This National Historic Landmark has been home to the National Trust for over 30 years.
Each photo added makes the picture of this beautiful Beaux Arts Building clearer and more complete. The pictures also make a powerful statement that when individuals stand up for a place they care about they are not alone but are part of a growing national movement dedicated to protecting the places that matter to all of us.
