Conneaut Lake Institute, Inc.
Conneaut Lake Park most definitely matters. 2012 will mark the Park's 120th anniversary.
CLP is PA's 3rd and the US' 12th oldest amusement park (source: NAPHA). At a time when small amusement parks have dwindled, CLP has demonstrated a resiliency to overcome closure (2007-2008), and devastating fire to the Dreamland Ballroom. With unbelievable dedication and amazing support, CLP reopened the Park in 2009; and its signature ride, the 1938 Blue Streak wooden rollercoaster, opened last September after being closed for almost 5 seasons. Financial hardships have plagued the Park's history, and continue to be a challenge, but with successful and ongoing projects to renovate the Hotel, reconstruct the boardwalk, repair and maintain the Blue Streak, and return the carousel organ, CLP is proving that it deserves to be preserved.
CLP offers a venue that is unmatched in charm, beauty, history, and entertainment. In addition to the Blue Streak, the Park is host to a carousel dating back to 1910, and the world's oldest operating Tumble Bug (1925) among other adult and kiddie rides as well as a pony track. The beautiful 1903 Hotel Conneaut sits on PA's largest natural lake, Conneaut Lake, and has been the setting for countless proms, weddings, and other special gatherings. You can enjoy dinner at Elizabeth's, followed by a stroll on the boardwalk or simply relax on the Hotel's lakefront porch and take in the view. The Beach Club provides entertainment and nightlife, and overlooks the lake as well. The outdoor stage and lawn area offer a venue for concerts and festivals, alongside the boardwalk and lake. Enjoy a narrated tour of Conneaut Lake aboard The Kaylee Belle tour boat. The campground offers tent sites and rustic cabins to extend the visit.
Families have enjoyed the Park for generations, and the memories and experiences that so many people have make CLP a living treasure. People spent their childhood here, visiting on weekends or all summer long. People worked here, and in many cases, so did their parents. Dances were held here. Bands played here. Spouses met here. Lifetime friendships were formed here. Reunions of classmates and families gather here. Grandparents bring their grandchildren to ride the same rides they rode as a kid, and share the joy and memories that CLP brings. CLP is not only an escape from a busy schedule, but a place where families can spend rare quality time together, and take a step back in time.
When an amusement park closes, that usually seals its fate. The community and extended family of supporters of CLP are working and volunteering to keep that from happening. Additional financial support would allow us to continue to maintain, preserve, and operate this historic park. We need to do everything we can to make sure that we continue to enjoy the history that CLP offers, while we still have the opportunity to preserve it. Conneaut Lake Park most definitely matters.
