Greater Houston Preservation Alliance & Houston Mod
The Astrodome was the building that gave Houston its identity.
It became the iconic symbol of "Space City." At a time when most people in the United States could not find Houston on a map, they knew that Houston was the home of the Astrodome.
Most people in Houston and many in surrounding states have stories about the Dome. Families traveled to Houston on vacation just to tour the stadium and see a baseball game. Over the years, the building hosted Rolling Stones concerts, the Republican National Convention, Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, rodeos and chariot races, not to mention 34 seasons of Major League baseball and 28 seasons of NFL football. The building returned to the headlines in 2005, when it served as a massive evacuation center in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. For its architectural and engineering innovations and its cultural impact, Texas Historical Commission has determined the Houston Astrodome is eligible for designation as a National Historic Landmark. The Astrodome represents a time when Houston dreamed big and some of those dreams came true.
