Historic Oakland Foundation, Inc.
The City of Atlanta owns Oakland Cemetery, however the burial plots are privately owned by individuals and families.
The Historic Oakland Foundation partners with the City of Atlanta to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Oakland Cemetery with the public as an important cultural resource and an island of tranquility in the heart of the city. The City of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is responsible for overall basic maintenance of publicly-owned areas, which is handled by the Sexton, Grounds Crew Leader and seasonal grounds crew. They provide basic responsibilities such as mowing, trash and debris removal. The Historic Oakland Foundation plans and oversees restoration, raises funds, provides guided tours, manages publicity, promotes membership and benefits (tours, newsletters, events), recruits and manages volunteers, plans and executes special events, and operates a Visitors Center/Museum Gift Shop. Together, the City of Atlanta and Historic Oakland Foundation are excellent stewards of the site.
