Kapaia Foundation
In September, 2006, the Kapaia Swinging Bridge was closed due to unsafe conditions caused by maintenance neglect.
For the last 4 1/2 years, community members put much effort into assuring that the Kapaia Swinging Bridge is repaired and preserved. Besides placing the Kapaia Swinging Bridge on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places, we have created and maintain a website, www.savekapaiaswingingbridge.com, where announcements, news, photos and stories are posted. We do extensive research on the history of Kapaia, recording facts and family histories. We have met with government officials numerous times throughout the years to offer testimony and discuss matters pertaining to the historic bridge. In November, 2010, Kapaia Foundation was formed. Its purpose is to preserve and promote the rich history of Kapaia Valley.
This place matters because its presence is a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and hard work endured by the men and women who walked over the bridge daily, to and from the sugar plantation fields of Hanama'ulu. Without it, there is nothing to remind us of why we are here today and why the "local way" is directly influenced by the people for whom the Kapaia Swinging Bridge was built. Its value to our heritage is priceless. Once gone, no amount of money will be able to buy it back.
Our ultimate goal is to honor those who came before us by keeping this historical treasure as a bridge connecting the descendants of the Hawaiian and immigrant laborers to each other; and as a bridge welcoming those desiring to be a part of a truly special culture.
Our motivation to participate in this challenge is based on a desire to raise public awareness of the fact that the historic Kapaia Swinging Bridge is on the brink of extinction. Ultimately, we hope to gain more supporters. Although we have worked hard and accomplished much, our efforts have not convinced government leaders that this place matters. On May 5, 2011, county administrators informed the community they represent that they will not repair the Kapaia Swinging Bridge. The people of Kaua'i will not let this happen because this place matters!
