Helping people protect, enhance
and enjoy the places that matter to them

Otter Tail County Historical Society

From 1890 until 2007, the Fergus Falls State Hospital dominated the economic and cultural fabric of Fergus Falls.

It provided secure, well paying jobs for hundreds of people throughout west central Minnesota. It also housed tens of thousands of patients as one of the largest mental health facilities in the region.

More than an institution, it was a self contained unit and independent community. A large and varied farming operation provided for the dietary needs of residents and staff alike. Tunnels connected buildings and offered unrestricted movement on the grounds. Largely removed from public view patients were members of a private society that supported and entertained itself.

Losing the Fergus Falls State Hospital would create a irreplaceable void in the community. Its uniqueness is unparralled. The complex's historical physical integrity makes it one of the state's more notable and distinctive institutions. It is the largest, most complete example left of Thomas Kirkbride's plan for the treatment of the mentally ill. In addition, its history mirrors national trends in mental health from homeopathy and occupational therapy to crude shock treatments and lobotomies, to the rise of narcotics.

The reuse of a facility this large is challenging. Yet it presents opportunities that will never again exist. It is an asset, a one-of-its-kind resource that could become the anchor for economic development in Fergus Falls.
