Town of Elkin Main Street
The Reeves Theater is in the heart of the historic district of downtown Elkin.
The Theater opened on October 30, 1941 and operated continuously as a movie theater until 1973. The Reeves represented the only theater in Elkin and as such it was a mainstay in the life of the community. During the active life of the Theater, ownership changed hands several times between 1973 and 1994 at which time an unusually destructive storm caused the indefinite closing of the theater in 1994. Local Investors purchased the Reeves in 1999 and eventually deeded ownership to the Tri-County Citizens Foundation, a 501 (C) (3) in 2007. Beginning in 2007, the Foundation formed the Reeves Restoration Board co-chaired by Cicely McCulloch and Robin Turner. The Board began the current restoration effort which to date has included the replacement of the roof and complete demolition of the interior of the building.
