Unearthing Our Past

Mellen's Only Brownstone

This would be a perfect building for the "Unearthing Our Past" headquarters at some point in the future. This is Mellen's only brownstone building that served as a bank since the late 1800s until its closing several decades ago. The building remains under private ownership, but it's one of Mellen's most historic structures.

Of equal importance, however, is the mission of project director Jeff Peters to have Wisconsin high school students participate in the Unearthing Our Past project by interviewing elderly citizens about their personal history along with their community's history, landmarks, old buildings--basically any and all matters historical. Student stories will then be carefully edited for content and printed in our newspaper The ECHO, which is published by Jeff Peters and dedicated to preserving the past of the Badger State.

It's amazing when both teenager and elder come away from an interview with smiles and the knowledge that life experiences and adventures sincerely matter. Both the young and older citizens of this great country connect in this vital understanding that makes the project so special. Our youth--our future leaders--learn from an older generation that history is what connects a broad spectrum of people in our society. Unearthing Our Past and placing it front and center in the light of day is not just a story:  it's OUR collective story that will be saved for future generations. Your VOTE will help make that happen well into the future.

Northland College Supports “Unearthing Our Past”
Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, also generously supports the project by giving students whose work is selected to publish in The ECHO a $5,000 scholarship if they attend the college. Located on the edge of beautiful and pristine Lake Superior, Northland College has a long tradition of excellence and was voted by the prestigious U.S. News & World Report as one of the best national liberal arts colleges of 2011.
