Dozen Distinctive Destinations

From 2000 - 2011, the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Dozen Distinctive Destinations program provided an annual list of twelve cities and towns that showcased the best practices for creating an authentic visitor experience.

By combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes, and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization – each of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations offer something truly unique. In each community, residents have joined together and taken action to protect their town's character.

Browse below to see what cities and towns made the list each year.

Have a place in mind you think should be recognized? See if it qualifies for one of our other programs:

  • Help us raise national awareness for a one-of-a-kind place in your area – and generate local support for protecting it – by nominating it for the annual America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list.
  • Nominate a successful preservation project for a Richard H. Driehaus National Preservation Award.
  • Tell your local historic sites about the new Distinctive Destinations program, a network of over 250 historic sites marketed to National Trust members. Learn more here.
