Hanford Mills Museum, located in the northwestern Catskills, operates an authentic water- and steam-powered sawmill, gristmill and woodworking factory. Guided tours show you working vintage machines powered by a Fitz Overshot Waterwheel, water turbine and steam power plant. Hanford Mills is one of the last 19th century mills to survive intact. Visitors can explore connections among energy, technology, natural resources, and entrepreneurship in rural communities, with a focus on sustainable choices. The 70-acre site also includes a hardware store, feed mill, several barns, a blacksmith forge, ice house, and the John Hanford Farmstead, which recreates home life in the 1920s.
